Stillorgan Community Planning Weekend

1st April 2006
A New Vision for Stillorgan

A wide range of community members and local shareholder attended the Stlllorgan Community planning weekend, held at the Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club, to discuss the creation of a new heart for Stlllorgan.
The Weekend was facilitated by John Thompson and Partners on behalf of Treasury holdings, owners of Stlllorgan Shopplng centre and other key areas of land. Through a series of workshops and hands-on planning sessions participants considered a wide range of topics including the layout of the central area, the mix of uses, the quality of the environment, housing and sustainable transport. Pariapants appreciated the opportunity to be involved in the development of comprehensive proposals for the central area and were keen to see a elementary transformation of Stlllorgan fit for the 21st century. At an appropriate scale and density and combining a rich mix of activities and uses including housing, to serve the whole community and to create an active and safe community hub. The community are keen to see improvements in the environment and the creation of high quality, landscaped public realm and a community square at the heart of Stlllorgan. Participants felt that the current range of shopping should be enhanced with a combination of chain stores, local shops and markets to create a variety choice and vibrancy. People had differing views about whether they preferred open air or undercover shopping. Of key importance was the desire to see comprehensive masterplan for the whole area developed in an integrated way with full and continuing community involvement.

Dun Laoughaire-Rathdown County Council are preparing a Local Area Plan and the outcomes of the weekend will be submitted to the planners for consideration prior to the completion of the draft LAP. That will ultimately inform the creation of a new masterplan for the central area. In response to the communities desire for continuing participation.

In developing the ideas John Thompson and Partners will be holding the first Stlllorgan community Forum at 7.30pm on Monday 8th May at Kilmacud Crokes GAA Club
